Creating a healthier planet
We are committed to reaching Net Zero by 2050 or earlier.
We have already reduced our direct carbon footprint and will offset the residual emissions through our partner Carbon Footprint.
For our indirect carbon footprint from our supply chain, we are currently setting milestone emission reduction targets. We will align our targets to the Science-Based Targets initiative which ensure our targets line-up with the latest climate science.
By the end of 2025, we will publish our transition plan which will further detail how we will meet Net Zero by 2050 or earlier.

What does it all mean?
Direct Carbon footprint
The total amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (scope 1 and 2) caused by an individual, organisation, service or product.
Indirect carbon footprint
The total amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (scope 3) caused by the organisation’s supply chain.
Carbon neutral
An activity is carbon neutral if all the residual emissions (following a carbon reduction plan) have been offset via high integrity carbon credits.
Net zero
Cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% - compared to a baseline measurement - with any remaining remissions removed from the atmosphere, via nature-based or technology-based solutions.
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) - Gases in the earth’s atmosphere that trap heat. Well known GHGs include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane or sulphur dioxide
Minimising our impact
We’re working to reduce the impact we have on the environment.
We have reduced emissions associated with our buildings through office relocation projects. Since 2022 we have:
- Decreased our office space by 15%
- Re-used and re-purposed over 70% of the furniture, with the rest either recycled or donated to charity
- Created an environmentally friendly workspace with over 2000 live plants
We source almost all of our electricity from renewable sources and transitioned the fleet of cars driven by our Vitality nurses to hybrid electric vehicles.
We are committed to reporting on our plans and progress and so are actively embracing emerging guidance and regulation, such as the TCFD framework, that will support best practice across the market and help enhance transparency.
We have updated our policies to reflect the risks associated with climate change. We continue to improve our Standards to help manage and track our progress.
We support the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) through our parent company, Discovery who are a signatory.
Our investments are managed by portfolio asset managers who have adopted responsible investment practices. We have also taken steps to reduce the carbon intensity of our bond portfolio.
We have multiple initiatives for our employees to help them live greener lives.
Electric Vehicle leasing scheme, which enables Vitality employees to lease an electric or hybrid vehicle at a reduced cost through a salary sacrifice arrangement.
Access to an eco-platform which enables employees to review their personal carbon footprint, as well as discover ways to reduce their carbon impact. We run focused campaigns every year encouraging employees to track actions in the eco-platform.
Car-pooling scheme access for Bournemouth and Stockport employees, to encourage lift sharing and reduce emissions from commuting to the office.
Our Green champions across the business regularly share their sustainability stories through our internal communications channels.
Working with our supply chain
Being a Force for Good, an exceptional partner and a good corporate citizen are key values at Vitality. We're collaborating with our partners to help reduce our collective carbon footprint.
What this means for our suppliers and partners
- We continuously review our suppliers' and partners' approach to managing environmental and social issues
- We are focusing on our most material suppliers, such as hospital providers, that are critical to our supply chain emissions reduction.
- We have updated our Supplier code of conduct to ensure all suppliers are managing their environmental and social issues.
- We have a Sustainability award at our annual Supplier awards, to recognise the actions our suppliers and partners are taking to decarbonise.
- From a DEI perspective, we are exploring how to support more Black, Asian, Mixed Race and other ethnically diverse-led enterprise owners in our supply chain, as part of our Race at Work Charter commitment.
Driving more sustainable choices
From more sustainable rewards to more options for recycling, we are continuing to explore opportunities with our Vitality rewards partners to drive more sustainable choices through the Vitality Programme.
- Mindful Chef, a certified B Corp1 recipe box provider, as a partner so members can order a recipe box in the knowledge that their food has been ethically supplied and sustainably sourced
- Giving our members the opportunity to book a hotel through our partner Mr & Mrs Smith, also a certified B Corp1, and choose an eco-friendly place to stay.
- Members receive a stamp through Caffè Nero when they use a reusable cup to redeem their Vitality hot drink voucher.
- Members get a 10% boost for recycling their old tech through musicMagpie (Selected tech trade-ins, up to a maximum of £30. Excludes mobile phones).
